Description

When I worked as a curator in the Indigenous Cultures Program at Melbourne Museum in the late 1990s, a number of my colleagues worked on a massive photographic exhibition which was later installed as part of an exhibition called 'Koori Voices'. Jane Lydon, in her recent publication Eye Contact: Photographing Indigenous Victorians, takes a moment to reflect on this exhibition: In fact, the talk in the Koori Voices exhibit is two-way, since some of the photo panels in Koori Voices actually speak to the viewer, with a number having been artfully redesigned to accommodate video images of contemporary Aboriginal Victorians, whose voices can be heard from strategically placed speakers. Hence, the exhibit takes on something of the character of a dialogue. The question is: a dialogue of what kind?
